What is counselling?

Counselling is many things, in its truest sense counselling is a type of talk therapy. Most people think of counselling as something to turn to when a situation becomes "broken", however I prefer to think of counselling and other types of therapy as tools. Tools that can be used to build things, like resilience, strength, knowledge and other skills all of which can be used to enhance your life as it is and prepare you for a more fully realised future.

Animal Assisted Therapy is another type of therapy similar to counselling. However in Animal Assisted Therapy the therapist is assisted by an animal who will sit with you while you talk. Sometimes Animal Assisted Therapy can include play therapy where you take breaks during therapy to briefly play with the animal. Research into Animal Assisted therapy has shown that animals can help people to relax and talk more freely.

There are many terms used in the mental health industry and understanding these terms can be difficult so let's break this down a little.

A Psychiatrist is some-one who has a background in both psychology and medicine (usually a degree in both plus extra). Psychiatrists specialise in the diagnosis and treatment of severe mental illness and as they have a background in medicine they are able to prescribe medications.

A Psychologist has a degree and a masters in psychology and the extra training in psychology means hey are able to diagnose mental illness. Some psychologists work alongside psychiatrists however many also practise counselling psychology in a practise treating clients.

A counsellor can be some-one who has studied psychology in the case of a counselling psychologist or it can be some-one who has studied counselling. Counsellors generally can't diagnose mental illness (unless they are fully qualified psychologists), counsellors work mostly with people who are undergoing a time of transition or change. A counsellors job is to sit with you through this period of change while you explore different solutions until you find the path that is right for you.
